About Us
Howard T. Herber Middle School, situated in the Village of Malverne, serves a diverse community that includes parts of the Villages of Malverne, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, West Hempstead, and the unincorporated areas of Malverne and North Lynbrook. Catering to students in grades 6 through 8, the school is committed to "striving for excellence" in education. It offers various extracurricular activities, including the Herber MULES sports program for 7th and 8th graders. Understanding that early adolescence is a pivotal stage between the nurturing environment of elementary school and the challenging atmosphere of high school, Howard T. Herber Middle School focuses on creating a supportive environment rooted in restorative practices that foster growth and positive relationships.
Restorative practices are integral to our approach, emphasizing the importance of building a strong, inclusive school community through proactive measures. These practices include circle discussions, conflict resolution, and positive behavior interventions, all designed to promote a culture of respect, accountability, and empathy. By addressing the root causes of behavioral issues and conflicts, restorative practices help students develop essential social and emotional skills, creating a safe and nurturing environment for learning.
Aligned with the Malverne Portrait of the Graduate, our mission is to develop well-rounded, resilient students equipped with the skills and character traits needed for success in the 21st century. This portrait envisions graduates who are effective communicators, critical thinkers, ethical leaders, and lifelong learners. In this nurturing environment, students are encouraged to take risks while feeling secure within a consistent and supportive educational structure, guiding them to become caring, capable, and ethical young adults ready to make responsible choices and adapt to the changing society of the 21st century.
