Howard T. Herber Middle School

On April 24, Malverne K-12 students and their families were invited to the high school for an evening of hands-on activities designed to inspire an interest in STEAM learning. STEAM is a teaching approach that combines science, technology, engineering, art and math to help students develop creative design, problem solving and critical thinking skills.

The event offered the opportunity for students of all ages to engage in chemistry, biology and physical science experiments, as well as art, math games and science-themed crafts. Students were also able to explore robotics, explore how the high school Winter Guard is inspired by STEAM and learn about the district’s new, award-winning Virtual Enterprise program.

In the library, high school and middle school student presented their science research projects, the culmination of a year of hard work both in and outside of school. Families were invited to view projects and learn more about the research procedures and conclusions directly from the students. Many of these projects have recently been selected for prestigious awards at regional competitions and this was the first opportunity the community had to view them all in one place.

“It was a night that not only showcased talents of our students but also highlighted the power of STEAM to ignite imagination, foster collaboration, and inspire innovators of tomorrow,” said Malverne District Supervisor of STEM Dr. Debbie Langone. “We are all scientists and engineers in our daily lives, and we strive to move full STEAM forward by sparking students’ curiosity as they grow into the scientists, engineers, artists and visionaries who will shape the future.”

The district is grateful to the educators who organized and staffed this annual event, and the members of the National Honor Society who volunteered their time to help facilitate the activities and share their knowledge and experience with the younger students.
